  1. Hi Jon,When I recieved my proof copy of nowhere to read for scholastic I was so pleased. I am only on the part when the teacher rips out Elsas hair (your school must have been harsh) and already im gripped. Your descriptions of the other characters are great but ou dont describe elsa, what is her appearance, all you have said is she has blonde hair but for all we know it could be ear length or hip length- how do you picture her?I will be looking forward to the sequels!
    Keep up the good writing,

What year is Nowhere set in?

    • Hi Ben,

Thanks so much for your comment, I’m really pleased to hear you are enjoying the novel. If you think the hair pulling is harsh, warning – there are harsher scenes to come! Elsa is small, quite scrawny and moody. She has very long, light brown hair. I assume you are reading an uncorrected proof, so some small bits and pieces might have changed since then.

It’s interesting that you bring this up, as I don’t typically like to describe my characters all at once – I tend to try and build them subtly, piece by piece, so by the end of the novel the reader has a developed image of the character.

Your other question is also a really good one – again, I don’t like to have dates ‘pinning’ the story to a specific time, but let’s assume it is set around now, 2013. There are references to financial woes etc, much like our current economic situation(s). However, in the following books, there may or may not be some quirky little things out of place in time, such as older technology. This isn’t supposed to imply any kind of ‘time travel’ or anything like that, just as a writer I find it interesting to play with such ideas 🙂

Thanks again for your questions and I hope you enjoy the rest – ANYWHERE, book 2, due in 2014!

  2. Dear Jon Robinson,
Your book is AMAZING!! It is one of those books that are so good that you cant stop reading it!

I wasn’t there when it happened as it was a suprise birthday present, but you signed your book for me and I am so pleased with it so thank you for that.

You should definitely make this book into a film because it has that suspense and excitement that all movies need- I think it would be a best seller and encourage even more people to buy the book.

Jes is my favourite character because she kind of relates to me – determined, a little gutsy but she also has this feel of responsibility and looks out for others (in her case Elsa). So I’m not trying to brag or bribe you, but if Nowhere was made into a film I’d love to be the part of Jes! 😀
I’ve almost finished the book (I’m up to the part where Jes has just killed Adler with the ibis) and I can’t wait for the sequel next year!!
    Sorry for the HUGE comment…
    Simone age 13 🙂

    • Wow, what a lovely comment Simone, thank you so much! I’m so glad you are enjoying it. It would be pretty awesome & exciting if it was made into a film, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if any producers are keen (and i’ll be sure to let you know if/when they audition for an actress to play Jes)!

Huge thanks again for your fantastic comment, would love to know what you think of the big cliffhanger at the end of the book (I assume you haven’t got there yet!? 🙂

      • I finished Nowhere last night and it has an awesome cliffhanger! Did Jes really die or was it a red herring?!?! :O I thought it was so clever how you got Alyn to find out about Jes through the walkie talkie. Is the “romance situation” between Alyn, Jes and Ryan a little like the Hunger games one between Katniss, Gale and Peeta? About that, I think Nowhere is as good as the Hunger games in loads of different ways! How did you think up the story and how long did it take you to write it? It was brilliant! 🙂

      • Hi Simone, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until the sequel, ANYWHERE to find out what happened to Jes (and of course the mystery behind why they are all in the prison…)! Ryan does seem to like Jes, who has a thing for Alyn, so it may be a bit of a one-sided love triangle at the moment…!

Thanks so much for all your awesome comments, it’s so cool to hear that you enjoyed it so much. I wish book 2 were already on the shelves, so you can see exactly where it’s going 🙂

The story was something I’d been thinking about for a while but never actually attempted- then one morning I sat down and just started writing. I wrote the first draft back in August 2011 in probably a month or so, but my literary agent and I spent some months editing it, and then another several months of editing with the Puffin team! All in all a pretty long process, but a lot of fun.

  3. I’ll definitely be buying ANYWHERE when it comes out, that’s for sure! Thanks so much for replying to me every time and answering all my questions… Keep on writing!!
    From Simone 🙂

  4. Jon, I just wanted to drop a line to say that since your visit in November ‘Nowhere’ has been the most borrowed book at Bacon’s College. I am frequently asked when the sequel is going to be released and the students recommend it to each other on a regular basis!

Thank you so much for an inspiring visit and a great book which is really getting the students excited!

    • Wow, that is absolutely amazing to hear – thanks so much for taking the time to let me know, Vashti (I knew they were awesome students, ha ha).

I loved meeting everyone and felt very welcome at the school. I’d definitely come back in a heartbeat if you ever wanted me to do any workshops or anything like that (and I’m actually around that part of London a lot!).

      All the best

  5. Hi Jon,
I am looking to purchase your book but am unable to find copies available. I would love to send you my contact info and purchase through you. I’ve heard great things and cannot wait to read the series!

  6. Hi Jon,

I have just started setting up a new library in a brand new academy and I am looking for posters to decorate the space. Do you have any Nowhere or Anywhere posters available? It was very popular in my last school and I have already bought copies for my new school.

    • Hi Vashti

I’ll email you (with the address you posted with on here) I don’t want to post it publicly as I’ll need to give you an email address, and it might end up alerting the spam-bots!

      All best

  7. Good Day,
I was just wondering about the concept behind ‘Nowhere’, and is there a real life situation that influenced you to write this fascinating novel?

    • Hi Sofie – thanks for your comment! There are a few things that influenced it; one of my interests is psychology, and there are lots of references to psychology experiments in all 3 books (Check out the “Zimbardo prison experiment”) and also things like Carl Jung’s “Synchronicity” 🙂
